The Guardians Update! Ms. Lewis - Special Programs Ms. Phillips - Math We’re back! I hope you and your family got to enjoy a little rest over the break! We are jumping right into our 5th unit of the year with some decimal, fraction, & percent conversions. Followed by integers, number lines, and absolute value. Please be sure you are checking agendas, graded papers, and growth slips to see how your child is growing as a 6th grade mathematician. Please visit my Curriculum Calendar on my website to stay updated on objectives and assignments. Ms. Hartnett – Language Arts Welcome back parents and students! I hope everyone enjoyed their two weeks off, and got to enjoy some beautiful fall days! We will be jumping right into the second nine weeks with a packed schedule! Go to the curriculum calendar on my website for details. Please make sure your child has all of the necessary school supplies that they need to be successful! (pencils, paper, notebooks, and binders) Mr. Millhoff – Social Studies This quarter starts off with a our Ancient Greece Unit. Plan for a vocabulary quiz on October 22nd during the 2nd week of the unit. Finally, during the 3rd week students will create a myth and take an end-of-unit test October 30th. The end-of-unit assessment is skill based and not a memorization of facts type of assessment. Ms. Stewart - Science Second quarter we will hit the ground running with our new unit about the lithosphere. Students will have the opportunity to create scale models of the layers of the Earth and learn about what comprises each of them. We will do some demonstrations to learn about the density of the layers, as well as how layers of rock are formed in our Earth’s crust. Every Friday we will engage in “Science Friday” where students will have the opportunity to learn more about various science topics, some of which may be related to our current unit. They will have the chance to use ZSpace in conjunction with The Friday Institute as well, so please make sure students are having you sign the consent forms for participation and turning them into me as soon as possible so we can get the ball rolling with this program! Team Information: Monday, October 12th: Guest speaker for students. Friday, October 16th: Early Release Day! Report Cards go home! First Quarter Awards Assembly! I am so excited to get to know each and every one of you this year! So, here is a little bit about me!
I graduated with a Bachelors in Elementary Education from UNC Charlotte where I met my oh-so-amazing husband Evan. We just celebrated our one year wedding anniversary this summer! I grew up in Asheville and LOVE the mountains and spending time outdoors. These outdoor activities include camping, hiking, backpacking, kayaking, mountain biking, and much more. Laughter and giggling is what gets me through the day. But what gets me started is a DELICIOUS and very caffeinated cup of coffee :). My favorite author is Francine Rivers and my favorite candies include Jolly Ranchers and Sweet Tarts. My favorite animal...Elephants! My favorite grade to teach...SIXTH! I have taught third grade and high school and I have to say sixth is by far the BEST! What a great year we have ahead! -Mrs. Phillips Parents & Guardians,
**PROCTORS NEEDED http://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080f4eaca82fa20-ccmms Wow! I cannot believe the end of the year is SO close. It has flown by. Before we call it quits though, we have a lot of important things to get done and communicate with you! Below is a list of updates that are very important for our EOG preparation & execution. **Testing week will begin this coming Monday, May 18th. Monday 18th - Science (teacher made test) Tuesday 19th - Social Studies (teacher made test) Wednesday 20th - Math EOG (STATE TEST) Thursday, 21st - Language Arts EOG (STATE TEST) **For that entire week lunch will be held after 11 p.m. This is later than our normal lunch time. So please be sure students are getting an adequate breakfast each morning! **Due to family circumstances, I will not be at school next week. This means that I will not be here for any of the EOG Testing. I apologize for any inconveniences or any uncertainties this may bring! Please be in contact with Mr. Carter and Mrs. Lewis if there are any concerns during that week. And please reinforce and reiterate all school & state policies and expectations for that week while at home with your child. Our testing coordinator is of course aware of this and has made arrangements regarding testing. **Every Friday until the end of the year (only three more Friday's) we will be having a Fun Friday. This is basically a 30 minute recess. Each student must earn 25 tickets in order to participate in this Fun Friday. Also, if a student has received one or more silent lunches, he/she will not be allowed to participate. **This week is spent reviewing material for our tests next week. Math Plus (Core 2 Math) has a project due this Friday!! In Science, your child is reviewing all units from this year. They should have review sheets to be studying as the week goes on! **As the weather gets warming and as the summer approaches please be mindful if school dress code. Thanks for all of your help at home!! :) We couldn't do it without you! -Mrs. Phillips Good Afternoon Parents & Guardians,
There are quite a few things that need to be discussed with you. BEHAVIOR **Student behavior has become a great concern for Mr. Carter, Mrs. Lewis and myself. We have seen many extremely unacceptable behaviors for sixth graders. For example, hitting and pushing people, continual non-compliance (talking while the teacher is talking, not listening to instruction when given, arguing and talking back to the teacher, running and tackling in the hallways and classrooms, etc.), inappropriate use of technology, lack of caring for school property, inappropriate playing/bullying in the bathroom, skipping class, and many more. Each of these things that occur are addressed with each particular student and as a class/team. However, while we have addressed these with a number of consequences, we for some reason are still continuing to see these behaviors. So, from this point on if your child is not following HOWL (Honor, Order, Wisdom, Leadership) or school policy they will be immediately written up (the consequence may vary) with no warning. These school & classroom policies have been the expectation and have been communicated from day one!! CLASS PREPARATION **PLEASE spend some time at home going through your student's school materials. Many students are coming to class unprepared. Without notebooks, classwork/homework, and without pencils. They must be prepared to learn the moment they walk into the class room. Please remind your students of this expectation and how this should be implemented in the 6th grade. Much of their class time or time to work has been wasted trying to find a writing utensil. EOG's **EOG's are quickly approaching! EOG's will be held the week of May 11th. Over the next few weeks we will be finishing our curriculum for all of our classes and begin reviewing for the EOG's. In Math, students are to complete the assignments given to the on Tenmarks.com/login. They have received their login's. They are to complete the assignments by every Friday. TECHNOLOGY **Much of our classroom technology is slowly dwindling due to the abuse and inappropriate use. Please speak with your student about how to care for school property. If this continues the technology will no longer be used. Thank you for support at home. Caroline Phillips Well...
Who knew we would have yet another week off of school. This has really thrown us all for a loop as far as curriculum and timing goes. Therefore this week will be a very intense week of learning and student participation!! With that said, Benchmark Testing was originally supposed to be this week. Why you ask? Well because it's the end of the quarter on Friday believe it or not. However, I have not been informed whether or not testing will still take place this week. I will try my best to inform you or your students of that information as soon as I am aware. If we do test, students will NOT know all of the information because we have missed two weeks of curriculum. The teachers, school, and county are all aware of this. So no need to let that worry us!! Because of this crunch time this week (the quarter ends Friday) it is imperative that you be checking your students grades on power school, as well as checking their agenda! I cannot take any student work past this Friday the 6th!! Keep in mind that there will also be less grades in the grade book than in previous quarters because of all the days we have missed. Below are IMPORTANT DUE DATES for student work: *Sustainability Guided Notes (Science) were supposed to be due last Wednesday. I went around the room and checked for these today. ALOT of students did not have this done. These are important notes that need to be completed for student comprehension. *The Travel Brochure due date has now been moved to this Wednesday, 3/4. I gave students time to work on these today in class and will give them some time tomorrow as well. This however, might need to be finished at home. *Moon Observation Calender due TOMORROW 3/3. Because of so many missed days I am allowing students to catch up with their observations by looking online. This should be an easily deserved 100.... *Soil Conservation Power point - This was assigned WEEKS ago. I have been allowing students to work at their own pace. If this has not been turned in yet, it needs to be turned in by this Friday, March 6th. Classroom Needs: **Our classroom is in need of the following items if you are able and willing to donate. ** -Pencils -Markers -Colored Pencils -Crayons -Notebook Paper Thank you so much for all of your support at home. Keep checking the WCPSS website to get updates about snow make-up days. -Mrs. Phillips :) Parents, Guardians, and Students:
WOOO! What a whirlwind the last week and a half has been! I'm going to be honest in telling you that I thoroughly enjoyed my time to rest. I hope you all did as well!! Now, because of we missed four days, we are very behind on content that needs to be finished for benchmarks before we track out. Side note: I do not know but one of the make-up days, Monday, March 9th. Please be sure to check the school website regularly to be informed of the other make-up days. Anyways, because we have come to such a time crunch, your child's work will become more tedious over the next two week. Please be sure to check the website regularly as well as your child's agenda! Today in science your child received a guided notes half-sheet that they are to complete at home while going through a power point. All of this is posted under "SCIENCE". Your child also began an in class mini project, the Travel Brochure. All of the information, including a rubric, can be found under "Blog - Science Notes". This is DUE Friday 2/27. What is not finished in class will need to be finished at home. Please be mindful of this. Good Afternoon Parents and Students!!
A new update for what is going on in our classrooms and in our sixth grade den is LONG over due. :) So below is some key information regarding the up coming week or two. It's great to be back!! *Math Core 1 will be wrapping up and assessing Unit 8 - Ratios and Unit Rates this week. *Math Core 2 will continue with Unit 9 - Measurement conversion and percent application this week and should be assess sometime next week. *In science we have started a new unit called The Land Beneath Our Feet. Until the end of January we are looking at Earth's composition and the way we can help maintain it! *Although I have done a poor job at sending them home, ISN's (Interactive Science Notebooks) should be send home every Friday to be signed by a parent/guardian. The students' ISN's should have all of the notes from that week in their ISN. These notes will be posted under "Science - Blog Notes". Please be sure to take a look at all they are learning!! *Last Tuesday Mr. Carter and I send home a Technology Agreement. We have had some issues with the improper use of computers or the lack of care for the technology equipment. If you have not seen or signed your child's Technology Agreement please do so, as they cannot use the computers until the form is signed. *Tomorrow, seeing as the weather allows, will be the Science Fair. Students participating should be ready to go set up by 8 a.m. Parents coming with students, be sure to check into the front office. IF there is a delay in out schedule tomorrow due to weather, the Science Fair will still take place. However, if all school activities are cancelled for tomorrow, the Science Fair will take place on Wednesday, January 21st. *Report cards came out last Friday. If you have not seen your child's report card, ask them about it! :) *Please be reminded of the missing work policy. Late work will still be graded but points will be deducted accordingly. If your child is absent they need to come ask for the makeup work. They can't get credit if they don't know what the work is. I am always willing to work with them! Notes are posted on this website. *And lastly, this Friday will be our Quarter 2 Awards Ceremony, our Wolves of the Week, A/B Honor Students, Science Fair Projects, and many others will be awarded this Friday at 7:30 in the 6th Grade Den. Parents please come and join us. The whole ceremony is student led. It's fantastic!! Thanks for all your help and support at home!! -Mrs. Phillips :) Good Afternoon Parents and Students!!
I hope everyone is enjoying all of the sweets and celebrations this holiday season! I wanted to inform everyone of some upcoming deadlines & events. 1. Benchmark Testing is THIS WEEK for Math and Science. Science is Tuesday (Tomorrow!) & Math is Thursday. Students will be given review sheets/items to help them prepare for the exam. 2. The quarter ends this Friday. WE ARE HALFWAY DONE! Can you believe it?! But with that comes...report cards. I must have all missing work/make up work by THURSDAY at the latest from all students in order for them to get adequate credit. If they do not know what work they are missing they can see me during the school day to receive that information. Or log on to power school. 3. All Discovery Education Boards (4 of them) from this quarter are due by this Wednesday (Dec. 17th). They must be submitted in order for me to grade them! 4. Report Cards will be distributed to students the week (at least that's what I hear) they return from the Holiday Break. 5. The entire 6th grade is going "back to the basics" by reviewing all policies and procedures taught at the beginning of the year. We, as a grade, are having a hard time meeting expectations and are hindering the learning environment. Please encourage your student/child at home to be mindful of school expectations during the school day. THANK YOU :) 6. Students should return to school (after the holiday break) on TUESDAY, JANUARY 6th, 2015! 7. Lastly, I want to thank all of you parents for your fantastic support for me and Mr. Carter!! We are loving our Arctic Wolves Team and couldn't do this without you!! Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns! I hope everyone has a great break and a joyful holiday season!! -Mrs. Phillips |
